“Heroes of 300” Featurette

Zack Snyder, director of the 2007’s 300, figured his movie – in which Sparta’s King Leonidis (Gerard Butler) and his 300 brothers in arms battle the invading Persians – was a done deal after he filmed the ending.

But then Frank Miller, who wrote the graphic novel upon which 300 is based, contacted him with a brand new idea.  This time, an Athenian named Themistokles would lead the Greek navy against the Perisan navy, which happened to be commanded by an amazing woman named Artemisia.

“When he told me it took place during the same three days {as the first movie}, In thought ‘Wow, that’s very intriguing.
The next thing I knew he sent me an outline and some drawings and I said ‘Ok, we’re doing this.”

Noam Murrow, who took over the directorial reins, wanted to create a story that unfolded before, during and after the events of 300. Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, who both penned the resulting 300: Rise of an Empire, say you don’t have to see the first film to understand the new movie.

“Themetically it is in a similar historical context – so it intersects with 300 while from a different perspective that is just as engaging.”

Johnstadt says the film, to be released in IMAX 3D, runs on parallel tracks that he believes frequently come together.

“Not having to focus soley on Sparta, we were able to widen the lens and involve the other Greek City States, particularly Athens, which is at the tipping point of democracy.”

The aformentioned Themistokles, played by Sullivan Stapleton, is a combination of warrior and politician who must unite Greece to fight as one.

“He knows they may be no match for the Persians,” says Sullivan Stapleton, who plays the character.  “But he loves his country and believes in this new idea of democracy.  The script gave me insight as to what was at stake at that time.”

Meanwhile, Eva Green, who assumes the role of the ruthless warrior Artemisia, says:

“I was able to do some research on her because she actually existed, although she’s quite a bit different in our film.  But a woman commander all those years who was quite unusual, so she had to have been exceptionally strong.”

Returning characters comprise of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the Persian God-King, and Spartan Queen Gorgo (Leanna Headey), who now serves as both observer and leader.

“Gorgo is our storyteller,” says Deborah Snyder.  “It’s her voice that guides us throughout the film.  She is such a strong female character and adds a whole other layer to the story because she connects us to the past and to the present.”
