Marvel’s Ant-Man was one of the original Avengers. This is a fact! It may not be a widely known fact, unless you happen to be a hardened Marvel comics fan, but it is the truth.

ANT-MAN ImagePeyton Reed, the director of Ant-Man, knows this because he grew up with silver age Marvel Comics, and spent countless hours pouring over them.

“I was always into the early Avengers comics with Ant-Man because there was a real mythology to them. They’re just amazing tales, and the stories that were created in that period have really stood the test of time.”

Ant-Man made his comic debit in Tales to Astonish #27, which hit the stands in 1962, and later went on to appear alongside the titular characters in 1963’s Avengers #1.

Back then, Ant-Man was Hugh Pym, who discovered a chemical substance that enabled him to shrink down in size, possess superhuman strength and control armies of rats.

In Reed’s big screen adventure, Pym (Michael Douglas) passes the mantle on to Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), and sets the tone for a mentor – student relationship.

“That’s a classic Marvel Comics dynamic,” says Reed. “{It’s} something that we really haven’t seen in the {Marvel Univserse} so far.”

In this new take on the little known character, which also stars Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena and Bobby Cannavale, Lang, a master thief, helps his mentor protect a secret behind the Ant Man suit, and ultimately plans a heist destined to save the world.

“Ant-Man”, says Reed, is an incredibly powerful character.”

Indeed, the guy can shrink down to a tiny size and control millions of ants.

“You get to see what kinds of things a bunch of ants can get done and in what interesting ways they can help Scott,” adds the director. “We introduce the audience to different types of ants—bullet ants, crazy ants, fire ants, carpenter ants— and each of those ants has their specific skill set and we see how those skills are used to help out in this heist.”

Ants aside, Reed is delighted that Rudd – who is also playing Ant-Man / Lang in next year’s Captain America: Civil War – jumped on board.

“One of the things that excited me most about ‘Ant-Man’ was having Paul Rudd in the lead role,” says Reed. “There’s nobody more likable than Paul Rudd, but this role re-contextualizes him a little bit as an ex-con and a master thief, which was really fun to me.”

Before his stint as Ant-Man, Rudd played TV anchorman Brian Fantana in 2013’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. His other titles include comedies Role Models, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Reno 911: Miami.

“If you know Paul’s work, he’s done plenty of comedy work, but he’s also done a lot of dramatic work in both film and stage and he’s an amazing actor,” adds Reed. “I think audiences are going to really enjoy seeing him in a type of role that he really hasn’t done before.”
