“Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” Sequel To Receive Simultaneous Netflix and IMAX Release
In a massive break from traditional movie distribution, the sequel to Ang Lees Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend is to be released simultaneously on Netflix and in selected IMAX theatres – thanks to a special deal signed by The Weinstein Company and Netflix.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, has, for a long time, wanted a simultaneous release of movies on Netflix and in theatres. Such a concept does not bode well with many distributors, so the movie may not be seen in those IMAX theatres owned by major chains Stateside.
Directed by Yuen Wo-Ping, who also happens to be a martial arts master, the movie, to be released on August 28, 2015, heralds the return of original cast members Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen.
Sarandos, who announced the deal, said fans will have an unprecedented choice in how they enjoy the film.
“We are honored to be working with Harvey Weinstein and a world-class team of creators to bring this epic story to people all over the world and to partner with Imax, a brand that represents the highest quality of immersive entertainment, in the distribution of this film.”
Released in 2000, the original Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee, grossed up more than $200 million at the worldwide box office, and won best foreign language Oscar at the Academy Awards.
