The new chiller Deliver Us From Evil is based on the work of Ralph Sarchie  – a cop with a difference.  Aside from spending 20 years busting drug dealers and gang bangers in New York’s toughest neighborhoods, Sarchie also fights demons.

Sceptics will likely have a grand old laugh about Sarchie’s second job, which he calls “The Work,” but this veteran cop, who is now retired from the force, says he has investigated countless demonic possessions and assisted in numerous exorcisms.

In 2001, Sarchie decided to tell the public about his alleged supernatural experiences, so he teamed up with fellow author Lisa Collier Cool to write Beware the Night, – a memoir of his apparent encounters with the forces of darkness. The book was recently re-released under the movie’s title.

dufromevil (image)According to the book’s promotional page, Sarchie’s demonic caseload includes a house haunted by the spirit of a murdered 19th century bride and a lady who became prey to an Incubus – a demon which, according to folklore, sexually preys upon women. Then there’s the case of a couple, who, according to the book, were literally the neighbors from hell.

Now, Sarchie’s experiences are about to haunt the big screen.

Deliver Us From Evil, directed by Scott Derrickson, stars Eric Bana as the cop / supernatural investigator who teams up with priest (Edgar Ramirez) to investigate a case which seems to have a very strong demonic angle.

Sarchie originally sent a proposal for a movie to Derrickson and producer Jerry Bruckheimer about ten years ago. However, nothing happened for a while. Derrickson went on to make The Exorcism of Emily Rose – a courtroom horror tale inspired by the allegedly true story of Annalise Michael, a young German woman who died in 1975 following numerous exorcism attempts.

He later helmed Sinister – 2012’s supernatural hit.

“{The proposal for Deliver Us From Evil} was really compelling,” recalls Derrickson, “and it was based on fact, how a tough, blue-collar detective in a rugged part of the Bronx, becomes convinced that some of the incidents he’s investigating go far beyond the norm.”

In revisiting the project years later, Bruckheimer, the producer of Top Gun, the Pirates of the Caribean movies and Bad Boys, among other titles, wanted to blend the cop and paranormal genres – a concept which Derrickson believed would sit very well with audiences.

“The movie is not based on a true story in the full sense of the word, but rather inspired by paranormal cases in Ralph Sarchie’s book, strung together in a single narrative. The storyline that ties the different pieces together is fiction, but the scary sequences that you see in the movie are all based on real things which happened to Ralph.”

For his part, Bana says he loved the character of Sarchie and was especially drawn by the genre and subject matter.

“Ralph has to deal with something very dark from his past, and deal with it in a very dramatic way in order to move forward as a person. It’s a very relatable theme for people who are carrying secrets and things they’ve done in the past that they’d like to shake off. I like to believe that we don’t. We pay for it eventually, somehow, some way.”
