Cruise Enters Time Loop In Latest Pic
U.S. Release Date: 6/6/14
“It opened everything up and created an opportunity to explore what was interesting about Tom’s character and to witness day after day of the same day what takes him to the brink. It also forces him to become not only the soldier, but the man he has to be.”
Tom Cage (Cruise) is a former advertising exec turned military PR whiz kid who wises off the e wrong military hotshot (Brendan Gleeson) and ends up being busted down to a front line soldier. Much to his horror he’s thrown into the front lines of a massive war between aliens, known as Mimics, and humans.
Following his encounter with a Mimic, Cage, by all rights, should be deader than a doornail, but instead he’s thrown into a time loop which forces him to relive that day over and over again.
“Everyone else is going to keep doing the same thing,” says Liman. “The only thing Cage has control over are his own actions.”
Emily Blunt plays Sgt. Rita Vrataski – a soldier whose countless victorious battles with Mimics has earned her the nickname “Full Metal Bitch.”
“Now, she must also be a mentor to Cage, training him to be as strong a fighter as she herself is, or they’ll have no hope of winning the day.”
Edge of Tomorrow, which unfolds in the UK and France, is based on All You Need is Kill, author Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese light novel. The movie wheels began churning after producer Tom Lassally, who saw the potential for a big screen adapation, gave the book to fellow producer Erwin Stoff.
“I knew it would make a fantastic large scale feature,” says Stoff. “It’s exactly the type of movie I love to make – big exhilarating action with a really interesting narrative structure.
Describing Cruise as “fearless,” Liman says the star will “try anything and do anything.”
“He threw himself into the part even when his character was being killed or humiliated in some crazy way. He cared so much about the movie and worked so hard. That in and out of itself was inspiring to everyone.”
Then there was the physical training. Both Crise and Blunt started their pre-alien war work out months before shooting.
“The firsrt day of shooting they were both ready for the physical action required by the film. And that is a dream come true for any director.”
Liman says Edge of Tomorrow, in terms of its massive scale, is the biggest and most ambitious film he has made to date.
“I’ve never made a sci if movie or story about time travel and this one has both and a lot more. Both on and off screen everyone was completly committed to taking chance and making the most compelling film possible. I think it shows.
