Emmy Winner Kathy Bates Recalls Robin Williams
Kathy Bates, who won an Emmy for best supporting actress for her performance on American Horror Story: Coven, paid tribute to the late Robin Williams, and recalled an occasion when Williams did her a solid.
After winning a Golden Globe for her performance as the psychotic Anne Wilkes in 1990’s Misery, the actress wanted to call her mother from a pay-phone with the great news, but she didn’t have a quarter.
“I turned around and asked, and Robin said, ‘Here’s a quarter to call your mother.’ I never forgot that kindness.”
The actress would receive more kindness from Williams a few years later at the Academy Awards. After Bates lost to Judy Dench, Williams, during a commercial break, checked in on her to make sure she was ok.
“He came to me and said, ‘I really wished I could have had your name in the envelope; are you OK? I know how hard it is to lose.’ He was so kind to me.”
