Ethan Hawke Joins Luc Besson’s Sci-Fi Project
Ethan Hawke has joined the cast of Valerian, Luc Besson’s adaptation of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres’ 1967 graphic novel of the same name.
Besson, according to his own post on Instagram, has wanted to work with Hawke for the past few years.
Dane DeHaan is playing the time traveling character of the title, while Cara Delevingne portrays his companion. Both characters are space agents dedicated to saving peaceful 28th century earth from evil aliens. Other cast members include Rihanna and Clive Owen.
Besson is writing and directing the film, while Virginie Besson-Silla of EuropaCorp, which is responsible for its production finance and distribution, is serving as producer.
According to Deadline, Besson showed the storyboards to a group of journalists at ComicCon this past July. The feature also reveals that the filmmaker actually wanted to make this film a number of years ago, but temporarily shelved the project after seeing James Cameron’s Avatar.
This is by no means Besson’s first venture into the sci-fi universe. He previously directed 1997’s The Fifth Element, starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich, in which a cab driver becomes the focal point in a search for a legendary cosmic weapon.
Valerian is slated to open in July 2017.
