Focus Features Acquires New Chiller
The North American distribution rights of The Forest – a supernatural thriller about a forest populated by spirits of the dearly departed, has been acquired by Focus Features.
Screenwriter David Goyer came up with the idea for the storyline, which is being scripted by Sarah Cornwell.
Lava Bear Films and Goyer’s Phantom Four label are producing the film. Goyer, who helped bring Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to the screen, is currently writing Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice – the sequel to last year’s Man of Steel.
In a press release, Peter Schlessel, CEO of Focus Features, said The Forest will be a “cinematic journey to a dark and terrifying place.”
“I’m happy to be on that journey with Jason Zada, David Goyer, David Linde, and Tory Metzger. The supernatural scares of the ‘The Forest’ will be something that will genuinely thrill audiences.”
The story revolves around Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, located at the bottom of Mount Fuji, a place where people go to commit suicide. Searching for her sister, who has mysteriously disappeared, a young American woman ventures into the forest and encounters the souls of the dead.
Other producers include David Linde, the CEO of Lava Bear Films, and Phantom Four’s Nellie Reed.
