Fox Gets Rights to Best-Selling Fantasy Card Game
20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to Magic: The Gathering – Hasboro’s best- selling fantasy card game.
The studio is apparently hoping to launch a massive franchise on the same scale as Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings.
Involving cards with wizards, creatures, weapons and spells, that players use to defeat each other, Magic: The Gathering was created in 1993 by Wizards of The Coast, a card game manufactuer that became a major player within the world of collectible trading card games. Hasboro bought the company in 1999.
Writer – producer Simon Kinberg, who is also developing the studio’s X-Men and Fantastic Four worlds, is producing the adaptation. Kinberg will also make sure the movie series retains the spirit of the card game.
