“Gravity” Wins Oscar For “Best Director” Category
There was plenty of Gravity at the Oscars on Sunday night.
The space thriller, which stars Sandra Bullock as a scientist who becomes stranded in space, grabbed up an Oscar for Best Director.
Alfonso Cuaron, the film’s Mexican born helmer, paid a special tribute to Bullock in his acceptance speech.
“Sandy, you are ‘Gravity,’ you are the soul and heart of the film. You are an amazing collaborator and one of the best people I have ever met.”
The film, which stars Bullock and George Clooney, has grossed more than $270 million at the box office.
Speaking backstage after the Oscar ceremony, the director, who once wanted to become an astronaut, expressed hope that his victory would set a precedent for Mexican filmmakers and culture.
“I don’t think there is enough attention paid to Mexican culture and what is happening in Mexico,” said Cuaron, who spent three years developing film’s extensive special effects and other visuals.
