During his high school days, Jeremy Saulnier often made zombie movies and played in punk rock bands.  He never considered himself a musician, so he yelled into a microphone while his more talented buddies played the instruments.

green room imageYears later, the filmmaker got the idea to combine his punk rock memories with the world of filmmaking – a fusion which ultimately lead to his new thriller, The Green Room.

Whereas his previous Blue Ruin concerns an act of vengeance, Saulnier is this time opting for a siege mentality.

Pat, Sam, Tiger and Reece (Anton Yelchin, Alia Shawkat, Callum Turner and Joe Cole respectively) are members of The Ain’t Rights, a group of down on their luck punk rockers, who are at the tail end of a long tour.

When they land one more gig at a bar, located deep in the woods of Oregon, they discover that their audience comprises of some serious neo Nazis.

Headed up by Darcy Banker (Patrick Stewart), the local white trash put the punkers at the top of their death list when the band members witness a murder backstage.

Now trapped in an enclosed area of the bar – the titular Green Room – Pat, Sam and the gang must endure a massive battle against Banker and his fellow thugs if they’re going to survive the night.

“While there is still a rigid visual and thematic structure to Green Room, the story is driven by characters acting impulsively and under extreme duress,” Saulnier explains.

“When they make panicky decisions, I let them be wrong. They’re not action heroes, they’re scared kids, and not nearly as badass as they may have thought they were only a few minutes ago.”

On an emotional level, Saulnier says anyone, capable of relating to the band members, will feel the extreme danger of their situation.

“I like average people as protagonists because they’re also my audience. When they see themselves on screen it not only enhances their emotional connection to the story, it raises the stakes and intensifies the experience when conflict arises.”

Darcy Banker marks a sharp departure for Stewart, who is best known as the clean cut Captain Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in The X-Men movies.

“At first I kind of furrowed my brow at the idea because Patrick is so dignified, and so well- loved all over the world, and such an obviously lovely man, while Darcy is an absolute evil bastard. But then it occurred to me: That’s exactly why he’s perfect for this! He watched my earlier movie, we spoke on the phone, the stars aligned, and about two weeks later he was {in character as Darcy} on set barking orders to his henchmen.”
