Zoe Saldana seems to making more and more visits to the world of Sci-Fi. The actress who has played Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar and Lieutenant Uhura in J.J. Abrams two Star Trek re-boots, is now the sexy and deadly Glamora, a green skinned assassin, in the summer release Guardians of The Galaxy.
“I’ve had a real affinity for unimaginable stories, simple stories told in unimaginable places. This obviously enters the category of science-fiction, and I was fascinated with the world presented in this story.
An orphan from an alien world, Gamora has been raised bv Thanos (Josh Brolin) – an extraterrestrial intent on zapping the entire universe into oblivion – to become the ultimate killing machine. That, in turn, has earned her a solid rep as a gal who is not to be messed with.
“She is fearless in the role because she doesn’t aspire to being liked all the time,” says Gunn, who most recently wrote and directed the dark comedy Super .
“I was very moved by her being an orphan, being taken violently from her home and being subjected to a life of violence,” Saldana muses. “She grows up to be this stealth assassin but actually she has a heart of gold and really just wants to break away and become free.”
Even though actors, of course, want their characters to be loved by audiences, Saldana, in this instance, simply wanted to capture to Gamora’s true personality.
“Gamora is noble, but also vulnerable and often behaves quite badly,” reveals Gunn.
Such behavior, he says, is especially true when it comes to her relationship with Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, who was abducted from earth during childhood, and raised by a gang of thieves and smugglers.
“It has been interesting to see the characters interact, because as much of a jerk as Quill can be, he really tries to be nice to Gamora. and she treats him badly,” Gunn remarks. “Zoe has really helped me bring a lot of the texture to that role from the beginning, from the first time we talked.”
The action genre has always been a big thing for Saldana. As someone who has always longed to see female characters in action roles, Saldana says she is thrilled to make the kind of pics she watched as a child.
“I really hope this raises the bar and sets a standard for future generations of actresses. Women don’t have to be the damsels in distress. They can do a Marvel movie and play a badass character if they’re willing to put the work in.”
