Eggsy, an unrefined street kid, is recruited by a secret spy agency to save the world in Kingsman The Secret Service – director Matthew Vaughn’s semi comic take on the spy world.
It’s his job to recruit Eggsy (Taron Egerton), a street kid known for constant run ins with the local cops, into the firm and groom him for service. Even though Eggsy isn’t exactly the sharpest knife in the kitchen – at least that’s how it initially appears – Hart believes the kid shows promise and sticks with him.
In the meantime Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) – the villain who has some very special plans for the world – is accompanied by the highly unique Gazelle (Sofia Boutella) – a lady whose legs comprise of some very sharp blades. Being kicked by her is probably not the greatest idea.
There’s no shortage of fights, and Colin Firth has no problem defending the film’s violence. Insisting there is a strong comedic element to the bash-ups, the actor recalls the TV episodes of ’60s show Batman, in which comic style speech bubbles, showing the words ‘pow,’ materialized during fights. He believes the violence of Kingsman is “silly,” rather than glamorous.
He also described the film as a “Technicolor cartoon,” insisting there is far more cruelty in stories involving aliens, zombies and conflict in the Middle East.
To date, this latest title form Vaughn – the director of X: Men First Class, Kick Ass, Layer Cake, Stardust, Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – has generated good box office buzz. Variety, the LA based entertainment trade publication says the film serves up a younger and more streetwise take on the 007 formula, while the UK movie mag Empire, calling the film “filthy, funny and very violent,” says it’s the most fun James Bond has been in years.
