Thanks to TV’s The Walking Dead, countless zombie movies, novels, comics and video games, corporeal reanimation – the idea of the dead coming back to life – is not zipping away from popular culture anytime soon.

the-lazarus-effect-M_372_20141118_1254_hcc_cr_rgbIn fact, the sub-culture is about as relentless as the countless hordes of walking corpses which bombard a farmhouse in George A. Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead.

Now Jason Blum, producer of the Paranormal Activity movies, the Insidious franchise and two Purge pics, is getting in on the act.

His latest horror offering, The Lazarus Effect, concerns a student research team – headed up by Frank (Mark Duplass) and his fiancé Zoe (Olivia Wilde) – which has discovered a breakthrough drug capable of bringing the dead back to life.

The team is set to tell the world about their ground breaking discovery, but the mood quickly changes when events take a dark and sinister turn.

Zoe is accidentally killed and brought back to life. But she’s just not the same Zoe. Now Frank and his surviving pals have to deal with her wrath.

Directed by David Gelb – who says its story is a combination of horror, sci-fi and medical thriller – the movie is inspired by the Lazarus Phenomenon – named after the Biblical figure who rose from the dead – in which a patient mysteriously returns to life after routine medical resuscitation attempts have failed.

The list of incidents apparently involving this phenomenon include the case of a Colombian funeral worker who was shocked when the body of a woman, long declared dead, suddenly started moving.

Also, there’s the case of a dog, euthanised twice in the Ozarks, who was found happily sitting in his kennel the following morning. The dog was later adopted.

Gelb, who loves the concept of being brought back to life, says the story’s scientists want to heap hope onto patients and loved ones, but also learn the consequences to playing with the power of life. As a result, the filmmaker says, the fright factor is ramped right up a few notches, and the audience is constantly hit by the unexpected.
