Frank Miller, the co-director of Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, says his new movie is brimming with betrayal, darkness and guilt – all the stuff that goes into film noir.

eva greenThe 3D pic, also directed by Robert Rodriguez, is a follow up to 2005’s Sin Citya movie which grossed over $74 million at the box office.   Miller and Rodriguez, the helmer behind Machete, Machete Kills and the Spy Kids pics, directed that one too.

“{A Dame to Kill For},” says Miller, “is a story that I’m very proud of and Robert is very fond of.”

For the sake of those who are unfamiliar with this world, both films are based on a series of best-selling graphic novels written and created by Miller.

Like its predecessor, this second cinematic visit to Sin City – which brings back original stars Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke and Jamie King – comprises of different segments.  Two stories, Just Another Saturday Night and A Dame to Kill For are adapted from Miller’s comics, while two more tales, Nancy’s Last Dance and The Long Bad Night, have been written specifically for the film.

A Dame to Kill For, the central story, stars Josh Brolin as Dwight McCarthy, a private investigator, played by Clive Owen in the first film, who falls in love with the titular femme fatale Ava Lord (Eva Green).

Four years prior to the start of this adventure, which is a prequel to the first film’s The Big Fat Kill, Ava left Dwight to marry one of the wealthiest men in Sin City – a bombshell which hit the PI pretty hard.   That’s why he plunged head first into drinking binges and uncontrollable rages.

“Dwight is a very metaphoric figure,” says Miller.  “He’s the character that changes the most over time in Sin City.  When we first meet him in this film, he’s had a tragic affair that ended horribly and trying to pull his life together.  Just as he’s starting to crawl out of the muck, the woman of his dreams comes back and that’s where the trouble starts.”

When Ava, who has used her jet black hair and green eyes to mesmerise many guys into doing her bidding, suddenly jumps back in Dwight’s life, old feelings quickly come bubbling back to the surface.  Claiming that her life is in danger, she implores Dwight to save her from her husband and Manute (Dennis Haysbert) – his right hand man.

“Dwight becomes absolutely obsessed with thoughts of her again and all those triggers set forth that monster that he’s pushed down,” Brolin explains. “Once it comes out, he’s willing to do anything for her…to kill, to maim and put himself in a position to be extremely hurt.  It’s about obsession and lust and losing yourself to all that.”

Green says her alter ego, described by Miller as “every man’s darkest nightmares,” has no problem casting many a spell over men.

“Ava is an enchantress, a siren, she casts spells over men,” says the actress.  “She can read men’s minds and she can become whatever they want her to be. With Dwight, it’s very interesting because there’s a true connection. He’s probably the only man she ever loved.”

Green, in the eyes of Rodriguez and Miller, was the perfect choice for the role of the femme fatale.

“That character is one of his most loved characters and it’s a tough role. But there was one person we were in agreement…and that was Eva Green…She pulls it off to where you go, “Okay, that’s a dame to kill for.’  We knew that the actor would need to be able to embody the multifaceted characteristics of this femme fatale and we found that in Eva Green.”
