Sony Options “Girl In Spider’s Web”
Since the release of David Fincher’s The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, there have been rumours of a big screen sequel, but nothing has materialised to date. However, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Sony Pictures wants to reboot the series.
Under their plan, the series would jump straight to The Girl in The Spider’s Web, the latest adventure in the series, published just a few months ago. Following the death of Stieg Larsson, author of the first three books in the Millennium series, this latest title is the work of author David Lagercantz.
In the story, Lisbeth Salander and Mikhail Blomkvist, the series central characters, find themselves caught up in a web of corruption and cybercriminals.
According to the report, Roony Mara and Daniel Craig, who played Salander and Blomkvist respectivey in Fincher’s film, are not expected to return. In fact, The Wrap is currently reporting that Alicia Vikander, who starred in this year’s Ex-Machina, is being considered for the role of Salander.
Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal will serve as executive producers.
Steven Knight is currently in negotiations to script the project. Knight is also screenwriter of Eastern Promises, World War Z 2 and November Criminals, slated for a 2016 release, which concerns a teenager who launches his own murder investigation in Washington, D.C.
Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, released in 2011, grossed more than $230 million at the worldwide box office.
