Ex cops and corrupt cops, who all work for the Russian mob, are at the center of Triple 9 from director John Hillcoat.

triple 9 imageWoody Harrelson, Casey Afflleck, Kate Winslett, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Antony Mackie, Norman Reedus Aaron Paul and Clifton Collins, Jr make up the cast of the movie, which was shot in Atlanta, Georgia – also the filming locale of AMC’s zombie hit The Walking Dead.

That came in very handy for Reedus, who is also a star of that show.  During Triple 9’s production, which also coincided with The Walking Dead’s shooting schedule, the actor frequently shuttled back and forth between sets.

In fact, according to a recent press interview, the two sets were virtually side by side, allowing the actor to see his Walking Dead pals from the Triple 9 world.

At the core of that world, which opens with an intense bank robbery, is Irina Vlasalov (Winslett), head of a Russian crime syndicate, who’s trying to spring her husband from a foreign prison – a feat which requires one more job from the dirty cops and former police officers.

This is where the titular Triple 9 – police code for “officer down” – comes into play.

When they kill one of their own, a battalion of cops will race to the crime scene and inadvertantly allow the gang to make its getaway.  Affleck’s Chris Allen – a cop who just happens to be the nephew of Sergeant Detective Jeffrey Allen (Harrelson) – is the sacrificial lamb.

An interesting police action thriller which tries to tap into Heat’s wonderful multi character universe.  Unfortunately, however, Triple 9 does not come anywhere close to Michael Mann’s classic crime saga, and instead leaves the viewer feeling a tad confused in places.  A sharper story, more clarity and a much stronger dose of character development could have allowed for a far superior piece.
