Deep within The Vatican there exists a secret vault containing records, dating from the dawn of Catholicism, which chart numerous incidents of demonic possession.

vatican tapes imageThat’s the premise behind The Vatican Tapes, the latest supernatural offering.

“It’s about an ordinary girl who descends into darkness when strange and terrifying events unfold,” says director Marl Neveldine.  “As horrifying incidents escalate, we find out that Angela’s body has been consumed by the anti-Christ. ”

The filmmakers behind the movie  – specifially Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg –  are certainly no strangers to the world of devil possession.  They entered that universe back in 2005 when they unleashed the demonic possession title, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.  Now, they’re at it again.

“The big idea of The Vatican Tapes is that in a secret vault in the Vatican, there is an immense library that chronicles all of the possession incidents since the beginning of the Catholic faith,” explains Lucchesi.

A movie about demonic possession has been on Neveldine’s “To Do” list for a long time.

“{It needed to be} something supernatural, but grounded in reality.”

Anyone expecting tons of blood and gore may be a tad disappointed.  Neveldine says his movie is all about atmosphere and chills.

“We don’t try to pull any punches,” says Neveldine. “We’re not trying to look for any jump scares.  Instead, I want to get under peoples’ skin.”

To achieve the correct special effects, the filmmaker turned to F/X supervisor James McQuaid, who previously created terror visions for I Frankenstein and the Underworld franchise, among other titles.

“What we’re doing with the visual effects in this film and with James, is complementing what is already there and keeping the effects really subtle,” says Neveldine. “We don’t want anything to feel supernatural, just a little bit heightened.”
